Building and designing a water treatment system for a Kitimat floating hotel in four weeks

Kitimat, BC, April, 2014  BI Pure Water met the challenge of delivering a custom water treatment plant designed and built in four weeks for a ship that was leaving harbour to serve Kitimat’s housing shortage. The 171-metre ship, leased by Bridgemans Services and the Haisla Nation, provides temporary housing for a community already bulging with workers and with a shortage of rental homes. The ship will be re-branded as the Delta Spirit Lodge while it houses Rio Tinto Alcan workers for nine months. The community is booming with growth in resource industries, and the population could explode if several proposed liquefied natural gas projects are approved.

A local stream provides 96.4 Liters/min of raw water supply. The package water treatment plant has systems for media filtration, ultra-violet disinfection and chlorination. Whether the plant will float on a barge, be housed on land with connections to the ship or installed on the ship with fluctuating wave action is still to be determined!

Package treatment plant upgrade delivered to Sundance power station

Alberta power utility Transalta is providing optimal water treatment of it’s process water before returning it to its source. While an existing treatment facility already fully removes pathogenic cysts and viruses, in the upgrade organic carbon material and disinfection byproducts are also removed, and trace contaminants and total dissolved solids are rejected. Transalta contracted BI Pure Water to provide upgrades to it’s Keephills and Sundance sites.

The system consists of two-stage activated carbon (GAC) adsorption, which also removes residual ozone from the pre-treated water. TDS and contaminants are removed by a reverse osmosis (RO) system. Cartridge carbon adsorption ensures minute organic compounds are captured. Post-RO treatment consists of pH adjustment and/or re-mineralization. Final disinfection occurs by injection of a sodium hypochlorite solution at a level typically around 0.5 mg/L in order to establish and maintain a minimum chlorine residual greater than 0.1 mg/L (0.1 ppm) in the distribution system. The treated water is expected to exceed Alberta drinking water standards.
