Ultrafiltration is the ultimate in versatility for water treatment
Ultrafiltration (UF) is a membrane barrier that filters out particles as small as 0.01 microns, including bacteria, viruses and colloids. UF has several advantages when compared to conventional treatments such as clarifiers and media filters. It has high tolerance to feed water quality upsets, is an absolute barrier, and improves water quality.
BI Pure Water has used UF successfully for municipal potable water for removing turbidity, wastewater reuse, industrial sites, as a pre-filter to RO – the variety of UF applications is growing.
UF membranes used have been tested and certified by NSF International under NSF/ANSI Standard 61, and also have NSF/ANSI 419 LRV certifications facilitating safe use in drinking water applications.
The UF membrane manufacturer and size is chosen by us based on each customer’s application and specifications for optimum performance. Membrane skids are modular and can be scaled to any size.

UF Monitoring and Maintenance and CIP
The UF unit is monitored and operated by the PLC, including automatic CIP backwashes.

The CIP may include a sodium hypochlorite backwash as needed or, if required based on water quality, caustic soda or acid backwash can be added. Modules for a weekly, monthly, or longer Chemically Enhanced Backwash (CEB) can be added with specific cleaners.
In our experience ultrafiltration membranes last from 5-7 years. Clients are saving on daily maintenance and filter costs and appreciate the environmental impact of fewer consumables.
Potable water UF membranes have an integrated membrane integrity test. In the case of a membrane break a warning is sent to the operator. The Backwash may include an air scour step, with air supplied by an Air Blower. For waste process water the UF may have a turbidity analyzer that checks the quality of the water and if the turbidity goes above a certain level a warning is sent to the operator that there may be a break in the membrane.
Programming
UF units are equipped with fully programmable PLC controls with an intuitive PC graphical interface. It allows the operator to view and modify the settings by icons on a touchscreen to optimize the system performance. A second password protected-layer allows service and installation personnel to set up the basic process and the peripherals.
Data Logging
The unit’s controller holds a data logger, which is able to log up to 90 days of operating data, including:
- date and time
- feed and filtrate pressure
- filtrate flow
- turbidity, if turbidity meter is connected
- alert occurred (if applicable)
- last system status before log
